‘Better Represent Us, Not Them’: Trump Targets India While Referring to US Ambassador-Designate Sergio Gor
The visit of U.S envoy Gor has caused speculation that he is in New Delhi to solidify preparations of a meeting between Mr. Trump and Mr. Modi on the margins of the upcoming ASEAN related summits in Kuala Lumpur.
‘Better Represent Us, Not Them’: In a move to re-establish relationships and accelerate the India- U.S. trade agreement, the U.S. ambassador-designate to India and special envoy of President Donald Trump to South and central Asian Affairs Sergio Gor visited Delhi on Saturday ( October 11, 2025) and held a meeting with the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
The U.S. Embassy announced that Mr. Gor who is in New Delhi only briefly will only take charge in the new year, creating speculation that he has come to iron out the details of a meeting between Mr. Trump and Mr. Modi on the sidelines of the forthcoming ASEAN meetings in Kuala Lumpur on October 26 and 27.
As part of a post, Mr. Gor reported that he was sure the U.S.-India relationship will continue to improve during the next few months.

Trying to mend relationships and speed up the India-U.S. trade deal, Sergio Gor, the ambassador-designate of the U.S to India, and special envoy to the South and Central Asian Affairs of President Donald Trump came to Delhi on Saturday (October 11, 2025) and met the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The U.S. Embassy said that Mr. Gor is only taking over charge in the new year and this raised speculation that he had come to solidify an arrangement on a meeting between Mr. Trump and Mr. Modi at the fringes of the upcoming ASEAN-related summits in Kuala Lumpur on October 26 and 27.
“I’m confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India–U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership,” PM Modi said on X .In a post Mr. Gor replied that he was sure the relationship between the U.S. and India will continue to grow in the months to come.
According to Mr. Gor, he raised bilateral topics with PM Modi such as defence, trade and technology with the media. He also said that we discussed the relevance of critical minerals and that it was important to both our countries.
Mr. Gor held successive meetings on Saturday (11 October, 2521) with PM Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The ferocity of the sessions with the foreign policy leadership of India is a pointer that the U.S government is keen on getting the India-U.S. relations back on its tracks once more following months of taking the 50% tariffs on Indian merchandise, visa crackdowns, U.S pressure to cease the importation of Indian oil into the U.S. and disagreements on the narrative of the Operation Sindoor. The two telephone calls between PM Modi and Mr. Trump in the last one month have however given hope that the two can mend the broken linkage in relations.
Specifically, any action by India to decrease its consumption of Russian Ural will be monitored, the praise of the Gaza peace plan by the PM Modi and the seven languages in which he has tweeted are evidently attempts to placate the aggravated feelings of Mr. Trump that India not joined other nations in nominating him to the Nobel Peace Prize and has denied that the U.S. played any role in ending the Operation Sindoor war with Pakistan.
most recent China-U.S. conflict, where the U.S. has retaliated by dictating a 100 per cent tariff on Chinese product in retaliation to the Chinese restrictions over critical minerals trade is also likely to make the India-U.S. trade agreement look more favorable to both parties.
Mr.Jaishankar, who was present at the meeting with Mr. Gor and discussed the India-U.S. relationship and the significance of it in the world, posted on social media, congratulating him on his new responsibility in Delhi. The Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Mr.Gor and Mr. Misri shared a fruitful dialogue on the subject of the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and their common priorities.
Mr. Gor comes with his deputy secretary of management and resources Michael J. Rigas who came a few days after he was appointed ambassador of the U.S. to India by the U.S. senate. His visit is peculiar because by the usual protocols, he should be receiving the invitation in Delhi, and hold a meeting only upon him providing his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu.
Nevertheless, the date of the visit, the meeting was only a few weeks ahead of the ASEAN summit, and the unusual way of diplomacy by the U.S is regarded as causing the sudden visit. Specifically, Mr. Gor is thought to have passed the urgency to reach the India-U.S. trade accord the earliest, before the leaders sit down.
. Gor was to visit India between October 9 and 14 according to a release made by U.S. State Department. But on October 10, before he landed in Delhi on Saturday ( October 11, 2025) to hold the meetings, he was at the Indian Embassy Deepavali party in Washington. Sources indicate that Mr. Gor will remain within the next few days to have meetings within the U.S embassy and also with the rest of the stakeholders within Delhi. He will come back later to deliver his credentials and assume the leadership of the U.S. embassy in Delhi besides his position in the region.
“We look forward to his permanent move in the new year but we are hitting the ground running,” the U.S. Embassy in Delhi said in a statement, referring to it as his “First official visit”.
