Email Threats, Morphed Pics, Then Gangrape: Student’s Complaint Details Shocking Allegations at South Asian University, Delhi

Email Threats, Morphed Pics, Then Gangrape: NEW DELHI Delhi Police has filed a case of gang rape after an 18-year old student of south Asian university (SAU) in south Delhi had reported to the police that she was sexually assaulted by four unknown individuals within the university premises Sunday evening.

Deputy commissioner of police (south) Ankit Chauhan, affirmed that an FIR was filed through the statement of the victim. The investigation of the case is carried out in a sensitive and prioritized manner.

Investigators with information on the case reported that they have not been able to find the four individuals that were referred to by the lady in her complaint, and units have been established to arrest them.

A copy of the FIR, which was obtained by HT, revealed that the BTech first-year student had been getting threatening mails in an unknown address during two to three days before the incident. She did not comply with the allegations in which the sender demanded that she met him near the campus Guest House at 11:27 PM.

The next day she got another mail with obscene language with directive to meet outside her hostel block. She presented these messages to three of her friends who visited the mentioned location at the time of mention.“They (the friends) told me to relax and rest because I was stressed,” she wrote in the FIR.

The harassment, she stated in her complaint, got worse on Sunday when the victim received morphed obscene pictures of herself through WhatsApp and Telegram, which was crafted with her display picture.

Along with the messages, they threatened to send the pictures to the students when she did not show up in the emails under the number 3.ed at the gate, but as she did not see anybody “The message read that if I don’t come to gate number 3, these photographs will be circulated among students,” she states in the FIR.She is nervous and cannot contact her friends over the phone, but ultimately she told another friend but was later getting very nervous and did not answer phone calls anymore, reads the FIR.

The victim also claimed that she made a conscious choice to follow a route to the convocation centre of the university that is less populated, as it is under construction. She was sitting too close to an area that had a security guard on duty.

She complains that the guard called a middle-aged man, and even a few minutes later two young men came. She claimed that the four trapped her in a vacant room close to the convocation centre, where she was sexually assaulted by the four. One of the rapists tried to get a pill down her throat, which she asserts to have spit out.

She said that the suspected attackers would run away after they heard people leaving the adjoining mess. She claimed after the attack that she was disoriented and traumatised and found with friends close by the campus theatre. The FIR also outlines the claims about the reaction of the university administration.

According to the victim, as much as one doctor mentioned the severity of the circumstances, the hostel director ignored her explanation and instead imposed charges on female students. Police and medical attention were recommended by friends but the hostel in-charge reportedly encouraged the victim to take a bath and change clothes. The victim also claimed that authorities blocked her communication with her mother and outsiders, and physically blocked her to demonstrate her injuries to her parents through video communication.“The administration was not taking (me) seriously and not allowing (me) to involve any outsider. I wanted to video call my mother and show her the bruises, but the hostel-in-charge and a guard were covering me,” she rumored.

On Monday afternoon the victim was called by a PCR. One of the female sub-inspectors and a group of them replied but initially the victim was too distraught to talk. She was counselled and medically examined at Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital, her formal statement was taken early in the morning on Tuesday.

It has been listed on the case under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, section 70 (gang rape), 62 (attempt to commit offence), 123 (causing hurt by the use of poison), 140(3) (kidnapping), 115(2) (causing hurt voluntarily), 126 (2) (wrongful restraint), and 3(5) (common intention). The officer responded by saying that an investigation was on and that the teams were trying to find the suspects and that the statement made by the woman before the magistrate was captured in writing on Tuesday.
