‘Rename Delhi to Indraprastha’: The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) was calling for Delhi to be rebranded as "Indraprastha" this Sunday, in a bid to tie the national capital to its rich historical past.

In a letter to Delhi Culture Minister Kapil Mishra on Sunday, the Delhi branch of the VHP made some pretty far-reaching demands - including renaming Indira Gandhi International Airport to Indraprasta International Airport, Delhi Railway Stations to Indraprasta Railway Stations & the Shahjahanabad Development Board to Indraprasta Development Board.

"The name of Delhi should be changed back to Indraprastha so that the name of the capital can be associated with its ancient history and culture," VHP Delhi prant secretary Suredra Kumar Gupta said in the letter.

"Names aren't mere changes; they mirror a nation's consciousness. When we say Delhi, we only see a period of 2,000 years. But when we say Indraprastha, we connect with a glorious history spanning 5,000 years," he said.

The VHP official suggested that Delhi's heritage walking trails should take people to the forts, temples and monuments that were left behind by Hindu kings to make sure the city's story is presented fairly & not just through one viewpoint.

"Wherever there are memorials to Muslim invaders, Hindu heroes, sages, and sites from the Pandava period should also be introduced and memorials should be built near them," he said.

A "grand memorial" in the name of King Hemchandra Vikramaditya and a King Hemchandra Vikramaditya Military School should be established in Delhi, Gupta said.

The history of Hemchandra Vikramaditya and Indraprastha during the Pandava period should be included in Delhi's education curriculum, he added.

Gupta points out in the letter that these demands were made because - a bunch of people - scholars, historians and public reps all threw in their two cents & suggested them at a recent event called the 'Indraprastha Punarjagran Sankalp Sabha' that was held in Delhi not so long ago.
