Putin Praises PM Modi as ‘Wise Leader’, Confirms India Visit in December

Putin Praises PM Modi: Russian President Vladimir Putin said he “knows" Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not take steps that would humiliate Indians and lauded him as a “reasonable & wise leader, who defends India’s national interests".

Putin’s remarks came earlier this week as he indicated that his trip to India will take place in December.

The Russian president didn't name his American counterpart, Donald Trump, who imposed tariffs on India for buying Russian oil earlier this year, but he did criticise the Trump administration for pressuring China and India to reduce energy imports from Russia.

The Russian President’s remarks were directed at the Trump administration of the US as he criticised them for pressuring India and China to scale back energy imports from Russia, but he did so without naming his American counterpart, Donald Trump, who slapped tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil earlier this year.

“Indian people will never accept humiliation. I know PM Modi; he will never take steps of this kind. India, China refuse to take sides and aspire to truly create a just world," he said.

“PM Modi is a reasonable and wise leader, who defends India’s national interests," he further added.

He also highlighted the “special" and “privileged strategic partnership" between the two countries and said that Moscow and New Delhi have “never had issues".

In the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Russia, Putin spoke Thursday evening at the international Valdai discussion forum, attended by security and geopolitical experts from 140 countries, including India. He emphasised that Russia and India have a lot of potential for economic cooperation, but he also acknowledged that certain issues must be resolved in order to fully realise these opportunities.

“We need to solve the whole range of tasks to unlock our opportunities and potential advantages," Putin said, identifying financing, logistics and payment bottlenecks as key concerns.

“The losses faced by India due to punitive US tariffs would be balanced by crude imports from Russia, plus it will gain prestige as a sovereign nation," he said.

He further added that to remove the trade imbalance, Russia may buy more agricultural products and medicines from India. “More agricultural products may be purchased from India. Certain steps can be undertaken from our side for medicinal products, pharmaceuticals," the Russian President stated.

Putin also recalled that the declaration of a special strategic privileged partnership between Russia and India will soon celebrate its 15th anniversary, declaring, “That’s what it really is."
