As the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is set to be inaugurated in the near future, civic and traffic officials are starting to develop strategies that would alleviate the expected increase in the number of vehicles on the major roads in the city.
Heavy Vehicle Diversions
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is also negotiating with the traffic police to route heavy vehicles through the MIDC area between Uran Phata and decongest the Sion-Panvel Highway, which will form one of the primary routes to the airport.

Focus on Palm Beach Road
Municipal Commissioner Kailash Shinde told that Palm Beach Road (PBR), the Thane-Vashi arterial of the city, will have airport traffic and local traffic, and is therefore very susceptible to bottlenecks.
Continued Infrastructure Development
Within infrastructure, several projects are already in operation e.g. flyover at Turbhe, Airoli-Katai Naka flyover, and concreting of PBR to the NMMC headquarters in phases. When it comes to the sequencing of projects, we are sequencing one project after the other to reduce the disturbances since doing them simultaneously would only aggravate the traffic.
Coordination with MSRDC
NMMC also liaises with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) with an aim of reinforcing connecting roads to Navi Mumbai. As traffic moving through Mulund is likely to pass through Airoli and vehicles traveling towards Mumbai get stuck in the traffic at Vashi, the officials mentioned that close coordination will be essential so that there is no gridlock.
