New Delhi: PM Modi Pays Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi

New Delhi: On Thursday, the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid both tribute to the Father of the Nation as a world icon of peace, simplicity and moral power.

Going to social media, the Prime Minister posted an emotional message, which underscored the eternal relevance of Gandhi in the development of a better developed India.

The Prime Minister in his message highlighted the fact that the values of Gandhi are the core of the Indian nation towards becoming Viksit Bharat a developed, self-sufficient state that empowers all its citizens.

The PM also went to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi later at the Raj Ghat. Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar was with him.

President Droupadi Murmu also came to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghad.

The world recalls the birth of one of the greatest leaders in history Mahatma Gandhi on October 2 every year. This day is marked in India as Gandhi Jayanti whereas in the rest of the world as International Day of Non-Violence. The United Nations in conjunction with more than 140 countries supported the establishment of this global observance in 2007.

There is a special message to this special day, and it is quite close to the history of India but a universal message is universal to people everywhere.

At the United Nations, the day is celebrated by speeches and events which connect the teachings of Gandhi to the issues of the present days. These messages in the last few years have dealt with the numerous conflicts occurring around the globe and have taught us that the truth and non-violence that Gandhi believed in is much more potent than a gun.

In India, they honor him by visiting the memorial of Gandhi, the Raj Ghat, where they engage in cultural programmes and participate in mass campaigns that sell his ideology. These things are not mere ceremonies--they have called forth real action. As an illustration, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) is a project that was based on the notions of cleanliness, as suggested by Gandhi. Likewise, the advertisement of Khadi and rural industries indicates that he believes in self-reliance.

Thus it is a national observation day and an international day to remember the International Day of Non-Violence. It demonstrates that the message of Gandhi is not outdated nowadays, but it serves as the reminder that we should prefer peace to violence, dialogue to division, and compassion to fear.
