Australia’s Mitchell Marsh Tricked: India may have watched in dismay as Mitchell Marsh steered Australia towards a smooth seven-wicket win in Perth, but by all accounts, the home captain came perilously close to being taken down a peg by his own team.
As the run chase was under way the right-handed opener found himself at 38 and facing a situation where Australia needed 29 runs to come off 57 balls if they were going to take the rain-hit game, which they did. Cramping issues started to creep in, and Labuschagne and Bartlett quickly came over to get him on fluids (which included a very surprising bottle of pickle juice and a sports gel to boot)
He seemed fine after just the juice, but made a funky face after consuming the gel, which fans on X (formerly Twitter) picked up to be ‘What’s that… that’s off (stale)’. Watch the reaction from the 1:30 mark here in a Cricket Australia highlight package of Marsh’s knock.

When asked at the post-match presentation whether he was a fan of pickle juice, the skipper replied
He replied: “I thought that was one of the sugar carb things. And they’ve done me like a dinner there, so that was awful, but it fixed my cramps to whatever company it was, it was great."
Pickle juice is used to sort out muscle cramps really quickly, its quite an acquired taste - its sour and salty flavour can cause a reaction in your mouth and throat thats said to interfere with the nerve signals that get all the muscles firing wildly, often within a minute of the treatment, and sometimes before you've even had a chance to absorb all the good stuff.
Marsh, however, soldiered on and remained unbeaten on 46 (52) as Australia successfully chased down India's DLS-adjusted target of 131 in just 21.1 overs
“The weather played its part today," Marsh said. “Big thanks to all the crowd that stuck around. I know these days can be really frustrating, but nice to get a win. It’s always nice to win at home. I love playing for Australia. The ball was swinging around a little bit. We knew that was going to be the case for both teams, so a little bit of a challenge to get through there. Proud of the way our young guys came out and took the game on."
India and Australia will now face off in the second ODI of their three-match series in Adelaide on Thursday, the 23rd of October.
