Train Tickets to Get Costlier as Railways Increases Fare — Check New Rates
The long-distance travellers, according to the announcement, will be the biggest beneficiaries in the Railway fare increase.
Trains in the country which form a lifeline to many Indians are bound to make it even more expensive as the Indian Railways announced increases in fares on Sunday.
As per the announcement, long-distance travellers will be the most affected by the hike but those travelling less than 215 kilometres were exempted of the increase in the fare. There have also not been increases in fares of suburban train travel.

The re-pricing will be implemented on December 26.
Test the new train prices as the Railways declares an increase
- General class tickets under 215 kilometres distance will not change their price. Suburban rail charges are also not reduced.
- A fare increase will be 1 pais per kilometre on distances exceeding 215 kilometres.
- The fare charged on mail or express trains in non-air-conditioned coach has been raised by 2 paise per kilometre.
- The air-conditioned coaches have also been increased by 2 pais per kilometre.
- The new raise will bring in another 600-crore of revenue to the railways, which it claimed, will cover the expenses of increasing the manpower and the network.
The Railways have announced a new fare hike, and this implies that a 500-kilometre trip in non-air-conditioned coaches will now cost 10RS more once the new rates are implemented. This extra expense will be transferred to individuals who commute by travelling in the AC compartments.
What was another thing the Railways said?
The Indian Railways in its press release has indicated that it has massively proliferated its network and operations in the last ten years and is adding up its manpower.
The Railways have claimed that its manpower cost has risen to 115 000 crore, with pension cost standing at 60000 crore. The overall operation cost has gone up ₹ 2,63,000 crore in the 2024- 25 financial year.
Besides the increase in fare, the Railways indicated that it is also working on improving cargo loading to be in line with the growth in the man power costs.
In July this year, the Railways had also increased fares. Fare on non-air conditioned classes on Mail and Express trains was raised by 1 pais per kilometre and the fare in air conditioned classes was raised by 2 pais per kilometre. It became the first increase in fares since January 2020.
