Mahua Moitra Slams Firecracker Verdict: ‘Don’t Waste Time Moaning About Air Quality’

Mahua Moitra Slams Firecracker Verdict: On Wednesday, the Supreme Court decision to allow the sale and use of green firecrackers in the Delhi-NCR region sparked a varied reaction with the government with its BJP elected officials opinion echoing support and a specific pocket of citizens, including Bengal MP Mahua Moitra, voicing concerns about implications for air quality in the regions.

The SC has allowed the sale and bursting of green firecrackers in the Delhi-NCR region from between October 18 to 20, 2023, and establishing the allowed hours of 6-7 am and 8-10 pm in it's decree. The Supreme Court wrote, and leaders of the BJP-led government supported, that the permission of a green firecracker was a "balanced approach," but there were voices speaking out against it.

Delhi Minister of Environment, Manjinder Singh after the order of the Supreme Court at a press conference stated manufacturers should ensure that no prohibited firecrackers are sold in the Delhi-NCR markets and also appealed to residents as well to consider only for purchase the "green" firecrackers.

Use to the firecrackers in Delhi-NCR has been long debated with some calling for firecrackers to not be restricted because it is tied to the festival of Diwali, while there are also many interested to the cause of limiting pollution and improved air quality in Delhi, which begins to decline often days prior to Hindu festival due to stubble burning in the neighbouring states and atmospheric conditions.
