Zubeen Garg Death Case: Fans Attack Police Convoy Carrying Accused to Assam Jail

Zubeen Garg Death Case: On Wednesday, violent demonstrations erupted in front of Baksa District Jail in Assam as five suspects in the death of Zubeen Garg were taken to the jail on a court order to remain in judicial custody.

Three police cars were burnt and more than one hundred police officers, not mentioning at least one journalist, were hurt in the stone throwing by hundreds of demonstrators outside the jail.

In a bid to put the situation under control, the police used force by firing in the air, using baton charges and fired tear gas shells.

When the convoy that was transporting the arrested person arrived at the jail, a huge mob seeking revenge on behalf of the late singer was present there. The situation was already tense as a part of the protesters started throwing stones at the cars carrying the accused, which resulted in disorder and a large number of policemen to diffuse the situation.

Subsequently, later prohibitory orders have been added around the Baksa jail and in Mushalpur town after the violence and RAF troops have been deployed to the location to avert any further escalation.

Two prime accused, the organiser of the North East India festival, Shyamkanu Mahanta and a manager of Zubeen, Siddhartha Sharma, are sent to judicial custody after both had been arrested on the first of October.

These others include Sandipan Garg, the cousin of Zubeen and a suspended Assam Police Service officer who took Zubeen to Singapore; two of the two personal security officers of Zu, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya, who were arrested on October 10.

All five had previously been in police custody with them being interrogated by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that was investigating the mysterious death of the singer. Their police custody was withdrawn Wednesday after which they were presented to the Chief Judicial Magistrate at Baksa, where they were sent to judicial custody.

The suspects were taken to 14 days judicial custody. All the five accused did not apply bail at the court. They were taken on a newly built prison at Baksa district that was some 100km distant around Guwahati.

The special investigation team (SIT) of the criminal investigation department (CID) of Assam police arrested them earlier this month over their possible role in the death of Zubeen on September 19 who went swimming in the sea in Singapore.

MP Gupta, the SIT head of the 10 member panel and Special DGP (CID), informed the journalists that the two additional accused sons of Garg (who was at the location where the singer was killed) Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta will have their remand expired on September 17, and both would appear before the court on that date.

So far seven out of 11 NRIs stationed in Singapore, who had received notices by the CID, have reached Guwahati and joined the investigation. That number has increased to 11 with three further recording statements made on Wednesday.

Gupta also told that the post-mortem report that is being passed on social media sites stating that it belonged to Zubeen is not authentic.

After the CID of Assam Police had registered a murder, criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder and death caused by negligence case following the death of Garg when he was swimming in the sea on September 19.

The incident had taken place in a yacht party organized by a group of Assamese NRIs and eight of them were there when Zubeen was killed as he was swimming in the sea. The SIT had already given summons to them and three other NRIs who were not present at the scene to arrive at Assam and help with the investigation.
