‘Girls Have Many Boyfriends’: After being gang-raped by four unidentified males on the South Asian University (SAU) campus on Sunday night, an 18-year-old student in South Delhi has accused hostel officials of carelessness and obstruction.
According to the FIR, instead of offering immediate help or alerting authorities, the hostel staff allegedly dismissed her account, discouraged her from informing her family, and even advised her to “take a bath and change clothes."
In her statement to the police, the victim made a strong allegation against the South Asian University hostel administration, claiming they were dismissive of her ordeal. She stated that the hostel in charge initially blamed her instead of offering help, remarking that “girls have many boyfriends" and suggesting that lack of security could allow them to “bring boys into their rooms."

The victim further alleged that despite her visibly deteriorating condition, the in-charge showed no concern and instead advised her to “bathe and change clothes," rather than contacting the authorities or arranging immediate medical assistance.
The first-year BTech student was allegedly coerced into leaving her hostel following a series of threatening emails and obscene messages. She was then sexually assaulted by four men near the university’s convocation centre on Sunday night.
A case of gang rape has been registered, and Delhi Police have formed multiple teams to identify the suspects. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan confirmed that a case has been filed under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including gang rape, kidnapping, wrongful restraint, and administering poison. “The investigation is underway, and teams are working to identify the accused," he said.
The survivor’s statement was recorded after counselling and medical examination at Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital. She later stated before a magistrate on Tuesday.

Allegations against university officials
The survivor’s FIR paints a troubling picture of the university administration’s response. When she approached the hostel in-charge immediately after the incident, a doctor present reportedly stressed the seriousness of the matter. However, the official allegedly dismissed her complaint, even making unrelated allegations against other female students.
According to the FIR, officials advised her to “bathe and change clothes" rather than contact the police or seek medical attention. The survivor also alleged that she was physically prevented from video calling her mother. “I wanted to show my bruises to my mother, but the hostel in-charge and a guard were covering me," she stated.
It was only after her friends intervened that a PCR call was made on Monday afternoon.
Students are furious about the tragedy and have protested, calling for greater safety precautions and responsibility. A prompt, unbiased investigation has been demanded by the National Commission for Women (NCW), which has taken suo motu cognisance of the issue.
Since then, the university has established an internal investigation committee and is working with law enforcement. More security has been put in place, classes have been halted, and student counseling sessions have been scheduled.
