Dangerous Covid-Like Viral Fever Hits Delhi-NCR: Top 7 Warning Signs to Know

Viral Fever Hits Delhi-NCR: More than half of Delhi-NCR families have been experiencing viral illness symptoms since last month. According to a LocalCircles survey, at least 54 per cent of families have one or more members showing flu or viral fever symptoms due to seasonal changes.

While the seasonal transition typically brings a wave of flu the intensity and scale of infections this year have raised serious concerns A new survey by LocalCircles has revealed a troubling statistic: 54% of households in NCR currently have one more individuals experiencing flu or Covid-like symptoms.

Given the widespread nature of the outbreak, it's crucial to recognize the primary symptoms associated with the current viral infections. If you live in the national capital, check the warning signs and symptoms associated with this deadly viral disease outbreak:

Fever: A sudden onset of high temperature is commonly reported.

Sore Throat: Persistent throat discomfort or pain.

Cough: Dry or productive cough that may linger beyond the typical duration.

Headache: Moderate to severe head pain accompanying other symptoms.

Gastrointestinal Issues: Symptoms like diarrhea and nausea, indicating possible new viral strains or complications.

Joint and Muscle Pain: Generalized body aches and discomfort.

Respiratory Problems: Shortness of breath, chest congestion, and wheezing, which are more pronounced in this outbreak.

"The current outbreak is the worst in years. While previously, the illness would last five to seven days, it is now lasting roughly ten days. The fact that people are feeling wheezing, chest congestion and shortness of breath is another significant change. In the past, fever, cough, and cold were the typical symptoms of flu-like episodes. Compared to earlier seasonal trends, this is a significant change." officials told the media.

54% households affected by viral illnesses

The survey asked, "How many individuals do you have in your household in Delhi NCR who currently have one or more Covid/ flu/ viral fever symptoms like fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, stomach issues, joint pain, body ache, respiratory issues, etc.?”

Among the respondents, 9 per cent answered that "4 or more individuals” in their household have symptoms like Covid/flu/viral fever. On the other hand, 45 per cent reported that “2-3 individuals” were affected, and 36 per cent stated that “no one, thankfully.”

The illness has been affecting people of all ages, though those above 50 years, young children, and individuals with pre-existing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, COPD, and cardiac issues are particularly vulnerable. According to the survey, "hospitals are reporting more admissions of people with pneumonia and bronchitis due to severe infections."

"Earlier, the illness used to last five to seven days, but now it is lasting about 10 days. Another important difference is that people are experiencing shortness of breath, chest congestion, and wheezing. Earlier, flu-like episodes would consist mainly of cold, cough, and fever.

People are experiencing what is called post-flu bronchial hyperactivity, where they are dealing with a prolonged cough. This cough can be very disturbing; it prevents them from sleeping at night, and they are unable to participate in their usual professional activities due to this persistent cough. This is a notable difference as compared to previous seasonal patterns.

This kind of wheezing or prolonged cough usually requires nebulizers, bronchodilators, or inhalers, unlike in previous years when people mainly managed with rest and symptomatic treatment," said Dr Neetu Jain, Senior Consultant, Pulmonology, PSRI Hospital.

In addition to common flu-like symptoms, some patients have also reported gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea and nausea, indicating the presence of new viral strains or complications.
