In July 2013, Garg was assigned to the post of Gurgaon CJM. The Haryana Police investigated the case initially but the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of investigations (CBI) on the request of the family.
At the time of filing chargesheet in December 2016, Garg and his parents were accused by CBI of causing the death of woman due to dowry payment.
The Gurugram Police registered the case under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 302 (murder): and the Arms Act.
On Tuesday, his lawyer, Terminder Singh, said that additional District and Sessions Judge Rajeev Goyal acquitted the three accused, Ravneet Garg, his parents K K Garg and Rachna Garg of all the charges.

The decision is still to be issued in detail. According to the defence counsel, the CBI had revised the charge against the accused in section 304B (dowry death) of the IPC when submitting the chargesheet and wrongfully accused him.
He further said that the dowry demand and cruelty charges were found untrue in the trial.
The defence also presented the case at the trial that no evidence of cruelty or discord was found in the marriage and also argued that even on the morning of her death Geetanjali had communicated with her parents normally and no complaint that she was harassed was raised.
Singh had first stated that a panel of doctors had expressed that Geetanjali had been killed and later, the CBI had pressed the case against the accused on a dowry death charge.
