The case occurred on early Monday when Amarnath Ram and his five children including three daughters tried to hang themselves and themselves. He, three daughters, and two sons survived and died respectively. The neighbours later broke in the house after being informed by the sons.
According to the locals of the village, Amarnath had been having problems with poverty and following the death of his wife 10 months ago, he struggled at hard to take care of his five children. They claimed that he was stressed after he borrowed with the help of a private finance institution. In the meantime, the police and government also felt that local moneylenders could play an important role in the incident and thus resorted to investigations of the matter.
“The need for CID probe was felt after contradictory reports about the role of money lenders. The family members hinted towards this,” said a senior police officer of police headquarters.
The local police investigation determined that the house where Amarnath was living with his five children was constructed under Indira Awaas Yojana when his father Tuntun Ram was alive. The wood and bamboo door wall covered with a brick wall were made on the house. Asbestos was extracted on the rooftop. The house had an electricity connection which comprised a bulb and a fan in two rooms. The house had no toilet. In one of the rooms where Amarnath was sleeping, there was a big chowki (wooden bed) and his five children were sleeping. The second room was the one that was owned by his brother Shivnath Ram. Amarnath has three daughters and one son who are currently in the close secondary school and are studying. The last born son was not enrolled. One of the daughters was hanging in her school dress.
Bihar congress state president Rajesh Ram reached the spot on Monday and discussed the special attention of sons of Amarnath with Muzaffarpur DM on phone and asked him to offer the benefits of government schemes.
During the interview with the media, Ram explained that because of financial crisis and poverty, there are families that are hanging themselves and their children. “This is a stigmatising incident for the Bihar government and a question mark on the empowerment of Dalit families. In many places people are forced to leave their homes and run away due to being burdened with debt,” said Rajesh Ram, adding that he is demanding from the government to conduct a survey of those people who are in poverty and starvation.
The sister of Amarnath informed HT that her brother was a labourer who has been ailing with financial conditions. His wife also passed away 10 months ago because of sickness. Amarnath was in some way surviving in poverty with his children.
Currently the district administration has retained both the sons in Ambedkar Residential School.
