Why Homebound Is India’s Best Shot at an Oscar in the New Year

It is highly likely that in the next New Year, the film Homebound would accomplish what Lagaan failed to achieve over 20 years ago.

Shot by a sophomore feature director, Neeraj Ghaywan of the independent film sector, Homebound has found its way into the shortlist of nominees of the Best International Feature Film that have just been announced early in the morning on Wednesday, after a very hectic campaign in the United States in the run-up to the Oscar vote.

The Hindi language movie, which further pursues Ghaywan in discussing the prejudices of the society as perceived by the youth in the country, is only the first Indian movie in making the Oscar list of short films in the Best International Feature Film (which was then known as Best Foreign Language Film).

By the time the Oscar shortlist, which was introduced in 2018, existed, Ashutosh Gawariker had already won the nomination in the category of Best Foreign Language Film in 2002 with Lagaan.

The other Indian movies to achieve Oscar nominations under the Best Foreign Language Film are: Mehboob Khan in 1957 in Mother India and Mira Nair in 1988 in Salaam Bombay!

Not a single Indian film has so far made it out of the nominations in the nomination in the Best International Feature Film Oscar category.
