WhatsApp for Windows Is Going Away: Meta Replaces Native App With Web-Based Version

WhatsApp for Windows Is Going Away: The WhatsApp instant message platform owned by Meta has dedicated applications (Android, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, wearOS, and Windows). Not only do these apps make sending messages far simpler, but they also contain a lot of under-the-hood optimization, making it far more useful than the unmodded web version.

But a newer report by Windows Latest hints that Meta is now abandoning the app in Windows native love to go with a web wrapper. Change comes with the new version of WhatsApp beta Windows, which appears a lot different than the one that can currently be downloaded using the Microsoft Store.

In a nutshell, to remind you, the desktop version of the WhatsApp was released in 2021 and it removed the necessity to use the browser version of the instant messaging tool.

What’s changing?

Although the purpose of the change is still not clear, it seems that the step to a web wrapper can cause less problem to developers of WhatsApp as they can easier update and bring new features to the application because it is much harder to deal with multiple versions of an application than with a single code base that stretches across all platforms.

This might appear to be a good choice but users have cried aloud that the web version of WhatsApp uses more RAM and resources than the native version that is already available on Windows. In its test, the publication added that the new version of WhatsApp consumed about 30 per cent more RAM when compared to the native app.

But the largest disadvantage is the fact that Meta stated itself that the web version of WhatsApp would be slower in comparison with the currently present native Windows app. Also, the web wrapper does not fit into Windows since it lacks the Fluent Design System, which, similarly to Google Material 3 Expressive and Apple Liquid Glass, Lanzador is a set of design and interaction guidelines to Windows 10 and Windows 11 apps.

Moreover, notifications will not be the same as in the native version because the new WhatsApp for Windows app is just a web wrapper. However, the more features the web-based WhatsApp will offer, the more likely that similar features are also going to be introduced on Windows.

The new release of WhatsApp Beta on Windows appears to be one which the company is abandoning the native implementation to resort to a web wrapper.
