‘They’ll Keep Paying’: Trump Renews Threat of ‘Massive Tariffs’ Over India’s Russian Oil Imports

‘They’ll Keep Paying’: President Donald Trump has again issued a threat to impose the US with tariffs which would be extremely large on India, unless it reduces its Russian oil purchases, saying he had a commitment in person with prime minister Narendra Modi that New Delhi would cease to import Russian oil.

Talking to the press during the Air Force one, Trump stated “PM (Modi)told me, ‘I’m not going to be doing the Russian oil thing.’ But if they keep doing it, they’ll be paying massive tariffs.

responded when questioned on the reaction of the Indian government, that it was not informed of any recent discussion between him and PM Modi.Trump replied, “But if they want to say that, then they’ll just continue to pay massive tariffs — and they don’t want to do that."

His most recent comments are based on his uncharacteristic comment on Wednesday at the oval office where Trump claimed that Modi promised him that India was going to cease purchasing Russian oil and that it was a move to make ,calling it “a big step."

Trump Says Modi Has Guaranteed Him Halt

The most recent remarks on the Indian oil trading with Russia by Donald Trump have elicited interest in the world with the US President claiming that the energy trade would soon be over. “…I was not happy that India was buying oil. And he (Modi) assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia. That’s a big step," Trump had said.

Giving a potential time frame, Trump said the transition would not be immediate but would occur over a period, albeit a short one, terming it a process that is somewhat a process.

Restating his argument in a bilateral lunch with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump stated that, “Well, India is not going to be buying Russian oil anymore."

No Phone Call between Trump and Modi: India

hours after the US President Donald Trump alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised him that India would not continue to purchase Russian crude oil, New Delhi had made it clear that it is interested in broad-basing and diversifying its energy sources to meet market requirements.

The spokesperson of the External Affairs Ministry Randhir Jaiswal stated that he had not heard about a recent phone call between the two heads. He further explained that the oil imports into India are informed by the responsibility to protect the interests of the consumers in a global energy market that is volatile.

“Ensuring stable energy prices and secured supplies have been the twin goals of our energy policy. This includes broad-basing our energy sourcing and diversifying as appropriate to meet market conditions," Jaiswal said.
