Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel on Thursday sent a letter to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal where he declared that he would retire from politics owing to the old age, advancing years of course.

In this letter, Ram Niwas Goel, 76 years old, expressed his appreciation for the respect given to him by all the party legislators.

“His guidance has shown us the right direction inside and outside the House for years. Due to his increasing age and health, he had recently expressed his desire to leave electoral politics just a few days ago. We respect his decision. Goel sahab was, is and will always be the guardian of our family. The party will always need his experience and services in the future too,” Kejriwal saif in his post on microblogging platform X.
While reacting to the letter, Aam Aadmi Party supremo and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said that Ram Niwas Goel leaving electoral politics "is an emotional moment".
Ram Niwas Goel has been Speaker of the Delhi legislative assembly since 2015. He represents Shahdara Assembly constituency in Delhi as an MLA.
Ram Niwas Goel had won the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, defeating Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Jitender Singh Shunty by 11,731 votes. He made his electoral debut in 1993 and contested from the BJP, winning his first election.
The Seventh Delhi Legislative Assembly met for the last time on Wednesday after the completion of its five-year tenure, holding its 74th and last sitting, ahead of the elections scheduled for February 2025.

Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, addressing the House, termed the occasion "emotional and historic."
According to news agency PTI, during its term, the assembly raised 1,095 questions during the Question Hour, presented 19 committee reports, and passed 26 Bills.
It also deliberated on the basis of its proceedings by presenting 702 special mentions, 39 short-term discussions, and 13 motions. Furthermore, he stated that four government resolutions and 14 others were also passed by the House.

“As Speaker, I have fulfilled my duties impartially, giving equal importance to both the ruling party and the opposition. Despite being a Union Territory Assembly with limited powers, remarkable work has been accomplished,” said Goel, reflecting on his role.
