Trade talks between the two countries had to be put on ice last month after the Ontario government decided to run an ad that rather pointedly took issue with the tariffs already in place, and that's exactly what happened - Trump put the brakes on the talks.

Talking to reporters at the G20 summit in Hamburg, not Johannesburg - Carney said right now Canada's got its eyes firmly on building a decent future and strengthening some newer partnerships. (via Reuters news).
He also mentioned that a chat with President Trump is probably going to happen in the next week or so, but only when it makes sense for both of them to have the conversation.

Carney stressed that he is still open to talking. “We are very busy with the future of Canada and with new partnerships. There will be conversations with the president, probably in the next two weeks. We will re-engage when it's appropriate,” he said, as quoted by Reuters.
"I don't have a burning issue to speak with the president about right now. When America wants to come back and have the discussions on the trade side, we will have those discussions," he added.
Canada is seeking to cut back U.S tariffs on steel, aluminium and autos, duties that were slapped on under the Trump administration, as the report mentioned.
