Fog had caused the diversion from Grozny, Russian news agencies added. The event, Azerbaijan Airlines flight 8243, bore 62 passengers and five crew members.

“The passengers included 37 Azerbaijani citizens, 16 Russian citizens, 6 Kazakh citizens, and 3 Kyrgyz citizens,” wrote Azerbaijan Airlines on its X (Formerly Twitter) handle, and then released the full passenger list of names to that flight along with hotlines for any family members of those on board.
It states that at least 29 survived according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the country in a preliminary report. According to Bloomberg, the plane had 64 passengers and 5 staff flying.
Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to Azerbaijani commander Ilham Aliyev for the loss of life in the Wednesday plane crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, quoted by Reuters.

Most of the 28 survivors on record thus far were located in the tail end of the plane, Interfax news agency said, citing the airline.
"This is by no means easy, because the flight crew has not survived the crash of Flight 8243," news agency Interfax reported, quoting the emergency response center.
