As it seemed, the plane crashed close to the airport in Aktau.
According to Russian news agencies, the Azerbaijan Airlines aircraft was diverted from Baku to Grozny in Chechnya, Russia, on grounds of fog in Grozny, while the fog on its destination was reported to cause the aircraft to be diverted.

Authorities in Kazakhstan stated that at least 25 passengers survived in the plane crash. Confirmation on the number of fatalities was awaited, however, officials cited in an Associated Press report stated that 42 people were likely dead.
Allegedly, a clip recording the aircraft crashing to the earth and becoming a ball of fire surfaced on social media.
Other visuals showed first responders near the broken remains of the plane, seemingly trying to retrieve survivors.
Embraer 190 of Azerbaijan Airlines, flight No. 8243, is reported to have carried 62 passengers and five crew members, forced to make an emergency landing approximately 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) from the Kazakh city of Aktau.
The reported number of people aboard varies across reports.
Authorities in Kazakhstan were in the process of ascertaining the cause with possible mention of a technical problem.
Kazakhstan's emergencies ministry later added that fire services have been extinguishing the fire, which had broken out after the crash, and that survivors are being treated in a nearby hospital.

In a different recent fatal plane crash, 10 died on Sunday after a small plane crashed into a town in Brazil popular among tourists. The 10 corresponding casualties were all passengers and crew members aboard.
According to Brazil's Civil Defence Agency, the incident has left over a dozen people injured on the ground.
According to the agency in a post on X, the plane flew into the chimney of a home and then the second floor of a building before crashing into a mobile phone shop in a largely residential neighbourhood of Gramado. More than a dozen people who were on the ground were taken to hospitals with injuries including smoke inhalation, with two said to be in critical condition.
Cause of the crash is not known immediately.
Local media reported that the passengers were from the same family and traveling from one town in the state of Rio Grande do Sul to another in the state of SГЈo Paulo.
