Thane Man Duped of ₹59 Lakh by Fraudsters Impersonating Customs, CBI Officials
As per the police, 54-year-old man from Maharashtra's Thane has been duped to the tune of ₹59 lakh by cyber fraudsters posing as Customs officials and sleuths of the CBI threatening him of an unwarranted action over alleged criminal activities.

Thane Man Duped of ₹59 Lakh: As per the police, 54-year-old man from Maharashtra's Thane has been duped to the tune of ₹59 lakh by cyber fraudsters posing as Customs officials and sleuths of the CBI threatening him of an unwarranted action over alleged criminal activities. The incidence occured between November 26 and December 2.
A senior police officer told PTI, “The victim received multiple phone calls from a person who identified himself as a Customs officer from Delhi. He told that a parcel belonging to the victim had been seized and drugs were found inside it. The caller claimed that the case was being transferred to the CBI for further probe.”
He was also asked to cooperate with a "CBI official," which according to the police is the complaint that the victim made.
He fell for a call by the so-called "CBI official"who claimed to have his name linked to serious criminal activities, including human trafficking and money laundering. The accused demanded a payment of ₹59 lakh to clear the matter and his name from the cases.
“Scared, the victim transferred the amount into bank accounts provided by the callers. However, after transferring the money, he realised he had fallen prey to a scam and approached the police to file a complaint,” the police officer said.

A case was lodged against the Thane resident under several Sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the new penal code which has come into force replacing the Indian Penal Code (IPC), July onwards, and relevant sections of Information Technology (IT) Act, based on his complaint.
The BNS sections invoked while registering case are 318(4) (cheating) and 319(2) (cheating by impersonation).
