Shashi Tharoor Reveals UNSC Dynamics: Says China Will Veto Any Resolution Against Pakistan

Shashi Tharoor Reveals UNSC Dynamics: "Former UN diplomat and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday said he does not expect 'anything specific' from a closed-door UNSC session convened in New York on India-Pakistan tensions.

Tharoor believes any resolution against Pakistan will be vetoed by China, being a permanent member of the body, reported ANI."

Calling it "a sad reality," Shashi Tharoor said that the only thing potentially achievable from the meeting would be a statement calling for peace and expressing concern about terrorism.

However, Shashi Tharoor added that any resolution against India would also be opposed and vetoed by several nations.

"I am quite confident that the UNSC will not pass a resolution criticising Pakistan because China will veto it; they will not pass a resolution criticising us, as many countries will object to it and probably veto it," the Thiruvananthapuram MP told the news agency.

To a follow-up query, Tharoor elaborated that the contents of what transpired during the meeting were largely unknown since no official statement had been made public.

Tharoor observed that only the unofficial briefings had come to light.

"There are 15 members of the Council, each with their own team, plus the Secretariat. There is no media; there is no audience," Tharoor explained.

“They (Pakistan) are one of the 15 members; India is not in the room. In these circumstances, Pakistan would have thought that they have an advantage,” but Tharoor added that, based on those briefings, the meeting did not appear favorable for Pakistan, as member states posed tough questions regarding Lashkar-e-Taiba and terrorism.

However, from what he added of the briefings, things did not look so good for Pakistan, with member states throwing down hard questions with regard to Lashkar-e-Taiba and terrorism.

The international community seemed to agree that India's response to the Pahalgam attack was "understandably provoked," said the Congress leader.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) convened a closed-door meeting to address tensions growing between India and Pakistan. During the informal meeting, several Council members pressed both countries to take steps toward de-escalation and encouraged Pakistan to pursue direct engagement with India through dialogue, according to news agency PTI.

The 15-member Council questioned Pakistan harshly. Many criticized the recent terrorist attack and emphasized the need to hold perpetrators accountable, said diplomatic sources.

UNSC refuses to give credence to "false flag" narrative

Council members dismissed the notion that the attack was a "false flag" operation, an allegation made by India stating that Pakistan staged the attack. Instead, they questioned if the Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist outfit, based in Pakistan, could have been implicated.

Some diplomats outright condemned the attacks on tourists based on their religion. “There was broad condemnation of the terrorist attack and recognition of the need for accountability,” one source said.

Sources told that Pakistan's final attempt to bring the matter to world attention "did not succeed." Several members of the Council admonished Pakistan for its missile tests and nuclear-related statements, viewing such provocations as actions that would aggravate the situation further.

The meeting of an hour and a half was organized in the smaller consultation room adjacent to the Council's main chamber.
