PM Modi Has 19 Days to Avoid Trump’s 50% US Tariff Shock

Suddenly, India has become the target of the US renewed attempt to muzzle Russia in the conflict between it and Ukraine. On August 6, President Donald Trump raised US tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent as opposed to the current 25 per cent due to New Delhi purchasing Russian oil. India reacted by accusing them of doing this action because it was unfair and unwarranted.

The sanction by Donald Trump will bean attempt to tighten the oil revenues in Moscow and force President Vladimir Putin to a truce in India. This higher tariffs will come into effect after 21 days which is, August 27.

On Thursday, Trump has also eliminated the chances of a trade dialogue with India until the tariffs issue is addressed.

Trump replied in the negative in the Oval Office when asked whether he would see more trade negotiations with India as he has announced to impose 50 per cent tariffs on the country as he said: no not until we get it resolved.

About the recent issues between India and the US, high-profile Indian-American attorney Ravi Batra stated that there is much more at stake during the tariffs by Trump.

What's next for India?

Dammu Ravi, secretary of economic relations at the external affairs ministry in India, on Thursday said the increase of tariff by the US lacks logic as reported by the reporters.

"This is a temporary aberration, a temporary problem that the country will face, but in course of time, we are confident that the world will find solutions," he said.

He also indicated that India could aim to redress its international relations.

According to the Indian official, every time a country is encountering tariff barriers, it looks at other markets across the world where it can export its commodities and the Middle East, Latin America, Africa and South Asia are among the locales that India is going to exploit.

"If the US becomes difficult to export to, you will automatically look at other opportunities," he said.

PM Modi, Brazil's President hold talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz InAcio Lula da Silva had a phone conversation on Thursday night, in which they discussed regional and international issues of mutual interest, according to a statement released by the Brazilian president on making of plans by the BRICS nations to confront the tariffs by Donald Trump.

Dammu Ravi, in his statement to the media, said, “Like-minded countries will look for cooperation and economic engagement that will be mutually beneficial to all sides."

In its statement, Brazil claimed that it together with India was the most impacted states due to the levies of Trump and that they needed to tackle the issues of the present time.

Putin and India National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met at Kremlin on Thursday, where Russia state-run RIA news agency quoted them saying they had emphasized their commitment.

Outer affairs function Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is supposed to travel to Russia on the visit that is planned in advance. Later this year, Modi will be welcoming Russian President, Valdimir Putin to India.

PM Modi's China visit

Modi is further setting out this first trip to China in more than seven years, a possible diplomatic rebalancing as tensions with Washington grow.

New Delhi officials told Bloomberg that Modi will visit a summit of the Beijing-led regional security organisation, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and meet with President Xi Jinping in a bilateral meeting on the sidelines. The venue of the SCO summit will be in Tianjin between August 31 and September 1.

On Wednesday, Modi received moral support over the tariffs by China ambassador: Xu Feihong in New Delhi.

“Give the bully an inch, he will take a mile,” Xu wrote on X over a quote from Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi denouncing the use of tariffs “as a weapon to suppress other countries.”

On Thursday, Modi said that he would not jeopardize the interests of farmers in the country, even at a great cost, in his first statement which followed the shock of Trump triggered by tariffs.

"For us, our farmers' welfare is supreme," Modi said at an event in New Delhi.

"India will never compromise on the wellbeing of its farmers, dairy (sector) and fishermen. And I know personally I will have to pay a heavy price for it," he said.

One component of a multi-layered tariff strategy includes sectoral tariffs on semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, autos, steel, aluminum, copper, lumber and other products on the grounds of national security. In a statement on Wednesday, Trump said the microchips responsibilities can be more than 100 percent.

China is another tariff train and they will incur a possible tariff hike on August 12 unless Trump waives an extension to a previous truce.
