New Orleans Tragedy: Associated Press, citing NOLA Ready, the city's emergency preparedness agency, reported that on New Year's Day 10 people died and 30 were injured in an incident in New Orleans when an automobile crashed into a large gathering.

At about 3:15 a.m., the SUV struck some pedestrians outside the intersection of Bourbon Street and Iberville in New Orleans, according to WGNO.

Further report adds that now Bourbon Street is closed, and emergency personnel are already on the scene. Nola Ready directed people to avoid the area.

According to witnesses who spoke to Kati Weis of CBS News: "A truck just sped through Bourbon, knocking over some people." In the wake of this incident, an individual leaped from the vehicle and began firing, at which point the police returned fire.

However, reports on the social media site X seem to corroborate the loss of at least 10 or more people in this unfortunate vehicle accident.

The hundreds of thousands who converged onto Bourbon Street, notorious for partying and celebrating New Year's Eve, may have made it just one street within the French Quarter that brims with tourists any given day of the year.

Many expressed grief and sympathy to the families of the victims in their reactions on X following the several posts by netizens.

“Whoever did this needs to face the true extent of #justice. And that may include cruel and unusual punishment if it's proven they did this attack on purpose,” one X user wrote.

“This is so sad RIP,” another wrote, while the third one said, “this is awful”.

“Horrible. The new weapon of mass murder. Why don't they have road blocks for events like this? In the current world they should have known this was a risk,” the fourth user commented.
