A police officer said that it appears the driver lost control of the bus that veered off the carriageway onto the footpath at high speed and ran over everything in its path. The bus finally came to a halt inside the compound of the Shiv Darshan Vihar Cooperative Society. Efforts to remove the bus were on more than an hour after the accident.
Joint Commissioner of Police (law & order) Satyanarayan said that an FIR has been registered against the driver Sanjay More and he has been arrested. “Police have been deployed and the area is peaceful,” he added.
According to eyewitnesses, the BEST bus first rammed into a bike and a police van, and then crashed into several vehicles for over 500 metres on SG Barve Marg.
