Kolkata Doctor Rape Case: RG Kar Hospital’s Ex-Principal Sandip Ghosh Granted Bail

Kolkata Doctor Rape Case: A court in Kolkata, West Bengal, on Friday granted bail to the former principal of RG Kar Hospital Sandip Ghosh and former police officer Abhijit Mondal in the doctor rape-and-murder case.

The Sealdah Court granted bail to Abhijit Mondal, a former officer in-charge of Tala police station, and Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, as the CBI could not file the charge sheet within the stipulated 90 days.

Sandip Ghosh had been arrested after state-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital literally hogged the limelight when a trainee doctor was found dead inside the auditorium of the chest department on August 10. Allegedly, a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, raped and killed the doctor on the intervening night of August 9-10.

He has been under the scanner because of his alleged delay in making investigations about the case. In the meantime, the probe was ordered by the Calcutta High Court regarding alleged financial irregularities in the hospital during his tenure.

This High Court order was passed on the petition filed by former deputy superintendent of the facility Akhtar Ali, who prayed for an ED inquiry into numerous counts of alleged financial misconduct at the institute under the tenure of Ghosh as its principal.

Earlier this month, the CBI said in its chargesheet that Sandip Ghosh allegedly helped two cartels in procuring hospital contracts, according to a news agency PTI report.

While the special court has taken record of the chargesheet, it has yet to take cognisance of the same as the West Bengal government had not provided sanction to prosecute Sandip Ghosh and other accused.

Sandip Ghosh resigned as principal from the state-run institute on August 12 amidst nationwide protests following the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor.

Ghosh, the former House Staff of the medical college Ashish Kumar Pandey, and businessmen Biplab Singha of Maa Tara Traders, Suman Hazra of Hazra Medical, and Afsar Ali Khan of Eshan Cafe have all been named in the charge sheet of the CBI.

"This case was registered in compliance with the directions of Hon'ble High Court at Calcutta relating to financial irregularities in RG Kar Medical College & Hospital at Kolkata," the CBI Spokesperson said.

The CBI has alleged that Ghosh and Pandey appointed several doctors as house staff in violation of the rules, according to them.

Ghosh aided the two cartels headed by Singha and Hazra and Khan in securing multiple contracts of the hospital. This is what the CBI alleges in the charges filed before a Special CBI court in Alipore.

"On careful perusal, it manifested that sanction order of the competent authority not yet received. Accordingly, cognisance is not taken sans sanction. Let it be kept with the record," PTI quoted the Special Judge.

Ghosh was principal of RG Kar Medical College from February 2021 until September 2023. He was shifted from RG Kar in October last year but mysteriously reverted back to it after a month.

He was made the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital within hours of his resignation in August this year, but was afterwards asked to go on an indefinite leave in the wake of the High Court's objection to his appointment and massive protests.
