Himanta Sarma’s ‘Nuclear’ Warning After Bangladesh Leader’s ‘Northeast’ Remarks

IndiaAssam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday that in Bangladesh, they are finalizing talks of separating northeast Bengal and Bangladesh and making it its own state.

Nevertheless, he opined that this would not be possible because India is the fourth largest economy in the world and it is a nuclear state.

“For the past year, there has been repeated discussion in Bangladesh about separating the northeast from India and making it a part of Bangladesh. But India is a very big country, a nuclear nation and the fourth largest economy of the world. How can Bangladesh even think about it?'” Assam CM said.

He went on to say that the people of Bangladesh are of bad mindset and that they should not assist them excessively.

“We shouldn't help them too much and should teach them a lesson that we will not remain silent if they behave this way towards India,” he said while talking to media.

These statements made by Sarma, follow a statement by a senior leader of the newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP) in Bangladesh, Hasnat Abdullah, who said on Monday that Dhaka would just isolate the northeastern states of India in case New Delhi plans to destabilise Bangladesh, which was reported by news agency PTI. He is also quoted saying that Bangladesh should offer aid to the secession forces in the northeast part of India.

As he talked on the topic of destabilising the northeastern states of India, Abdullah had stated, as well, that the states were geographically weak due to their reliance on the narrow Siliguri Corridor.

The Siliguri Corridor is also known as the neck of the chicken and it bridges the northeast region to the Indian mainland.

In early 2012 Himanta had previously threatened Bangladesh over its threat against the neck of the chicken of India and had added that any individual who was used to threatening India on the chicken neck corridor should take note that Bangladesh had two such strips of land and but much more vulnerable.

In a X-post Sarma had written that Bangladesh already possesses two of her own chicken necks and they are far more exposed.

“First is the 80 Km North Bangladesh Corridor- from Dakhin Dinajpur to South West Garo Hills. Any disruption here, can completely isolate the entire Rangpur division from rest of Bangladesh,” he had said.

“Second is the 28 km Chittagong Corridor, from South Tripura till the Bay of Bengal. This corridor, smaller than India’s chicken neck, is the only link between Bangladesh’s economic capital and political capital,” he added.
