Dhanteras 2024: As the festival season approaches the whole country is into Diwali preparations. Diwali is one of the biggest festival of the country and is a 5 day festivity period which starts from Dhanteras and ends on Bhaiya Dooj. Dhanteras is considered an auspicious day as it is believed that on this day Lord Dhanvantari, the doctor of the gods comes out from the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) with Amrit Kalash and some herbs.

Significance of Dhanteras

Dhanteras is celebrated every year on Trayodashi tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. On Dhanteras, people pray to Lord Ganesha, Goddess Laxmi, Lord Kuber and Lord Dhanvantari. According to beliefs, Goddess Lakshmi and Kuber’s blessings bring wealth and prosperity. Worshiping Lord Dhanvantari is believed to give good health.

Some people also observe a Pradosh fast on this day and worship Lord Shiva in the evening.

On this auspicious day people buy new things like gold, silver, jewellery, vehicles, houses, brooms, salt, brass utensils and more as per their capacity.

Rituals AND History of Dhanteras

Dhanteras is the day to worship Lord Dhanvantari the god of Ayurveda and Goddess Lakshmi the goddess of wealth and prosperity. We clean and decorate our homes and buy new utensils, jewellery and other things to attract good luck.

There are many stories associated with Dhanteras. One of them is of a 16 year old son of King Hima who was to die on the 4th day of his marriage due to snake bite. But on the day of his marriage his newly wed wife didn’t let him sleep. She piled all her gold and silver ornaments at the entrance of their room and lit hundreds of lamps.

She sang and told stories all night and kept him awake. When the God of Death Yama came in the form of a serpent he was blinded by the jewellery and lamps. He couldn’t enter and went back and the prince was saved.

Another story is associated with the churning of the ocean known as Samudra Manthan to get the nectar of immortality. During this churning several divine gifts emerged including Lakshmi the goddess of wealth and Dhanvantari the physician of the gods.

Dhanteras 2024 Date

According to Dr Mrityunjay Tiwari, Head of Astrology Department of Shri Kallaji Vedic University, this year Tripushkar Yog is forming on Dhanteras. This yog is good for all the endeavours done on this day.

Dhanteras 2024 Muhurat

As per Drik Panchang, Trayodashi tithi of Krishna Paksha in Kartik month will start on Tuesday, October 29 at 10:31 AM and will end on October 30 at 1:15 PM. So Dhanteras will be on Tuesday, October 29.

Astrologer Dr Mrityunjay Tiwari also gave the shubh muhurat for Dhanteras. According to him, on October 29, devotees will have 1 hour 41 minutes of shubh muhurat for worship. The shubh time for Dhanteras worship will be from 6:31 PM to 8:13 PM. Pradosh Kaal will be from 5:38 PM to 8:13 PM. All the timings are as per New Delhi time.

Auspicious Time to Buy Gold

Dr Tiwari also mentioned that the shubh time for buying gold on Dhanteras will start from 10:31 AM on October 29 and will go on till 6:32 AM on October 30. People will have almost 20 hours to buy gold on this Dhanteras.
