Britain's Home Minister Suella Braverman and the Indian High Commissioner met

The agenda of the meeting of UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman and Indian High Commissioner Vikram Duraiswamy was mutual cooperation on migration and security issues. About a month ago, Braverman made controversial remarks about Indians staying longer than the prescribed visa period. The Indian High Commissioner on Tuesday met Braverman, a cabinet minister of Indian origin, to discuss the India-UK security partnership and to "take the matter forward" under the India-UK Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP).

The meeting between the two comes after Braverman's controversial statement last month. In this statement, it was purportedly said that the MMP is unable to stop illegal migration from India and stay for more than the prescribed visa period. Following the meeting, the Indian High Commission in London tweeted, "High Commissioner Vikram Duraiswamy called on Indian origin on Tuesday to discuss the India-UK Security Partnership and 'take the word forward' under the India-UK Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP). In his reply, Braverman referred to the 'strong partnership' between India and Britain. "I look forward to working with my friends on mutually shared interests, including security and migration," he tweeted after the meeting. had countered the charge that the agreement reached with the Indian government for better cooperation on illegal migration had "not worked well".

The Indian High Commission had said in a statement last month, "As per the data shared by the Ministry of Home Affairs, till date, action has been taken on all the cases referred to the High Commission. In addition, Britain has also taken steps to meet certain commitments under the Migration and Mobility Treaty, and we look forward to significant progress." Britain had derailed the Free Trade Treaty negotiations. He had expressed apprehension that it would be an 'open border' policy for Indians. Then he had said, "Look at the migration to this country. Indian migrants are the largest group of people who have stayed longer than the visa period."
