The fight for Goa’s independence gained pace in the mid 20th century with both diplomatic and military efforts by the Indian government.
On 19th December 1961, India launched Operation Vijay, a 36 hour operation involving land, sea and air forces to liberate Goa, Daman and Diu from Portuguese rule. The operation was successful and Goa was merged into India as a Union Territory. It remained a Union Territory until 1987 when it achieved statehood.
