Over 80% of Indian Techies Affected by Fatty Liver Disease, Alarming Study Reveals

US Senator Warned Zelensky: According to research conducted in the University of Hyderabad, more than 80% of India techies have fatty liver disease. The study states that 84% of IT workers interviewed by it were suffering from Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) due to prolonged sitting, work stress, unhealthy diet, and neglect of physical activity.

According to reports, the Hyderabad-based study of 345 IT employees was conducted between July 2023 and July 2024 to find out the sedentary work culture with which the IT sector is often tagged. The researchers found that for MAFLD, sitting at the desk for prolonged hours combined with stress and irregular sleep matters.

The study has also found that 71% of surveyed IT personnel were obese, while 34% had metabolic syndrome, characterized by obesity, diabetes, and hypertension-afflicting conditions among the IT sector, which forms one of the backbones of India's economy employing more than 5.4 million people.

What is fatty liver disease?

MAFLD is said to occur when more than 5% fat is deposited in the liver owing to metabolic dysfunction. It is the most common cause of liver disease in the world. If left untreated, MAFLD can evolve into cirrhosis and liver cancer necessitating transplantation.

MAFLD also induces type 2 diabetes and factors into cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension and chronic kidney disease. The countermeasures are to avoid sugar and sugary foods, drink water, exercise for a minimum of 40 minutes, and avoid weight gain.

"Regular health check-ups and screening for fatty liver, along with proper work-life balance and stress management, may reduce the incidence of fatty liver," the study said.

The study findings emphasize the need for IT companies to be proactive in creating policies that promote employee health through wellness programs and engagement.
