The Last-Minute Nomination Drama of BJP Leader Navneet Rana

The Last-Minute Nomination Drama of BJP Leader Navneet Rana: The nomination bid for Amravati Lok Sabha seat by BJP leader Navneet Kaur Rana resembles a Bollywood story, replete with suspense, anticipation, and a twist of fate.

There was a buzz of anticipation at the Amravati Dussehra ground as the clock approached noon on Thursday. At a rally attended by supporters and political heavyweights including Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Navneet Kaur Rana, the incumbent MP, stood out.

In a case related to her caste certificate, the Supreme Court's verdict on Ms Rana's candidacy hung in the balance.

On June 8, 2021, the Bombay High Court had revoked Ms Rana's 'mochi' caste certificate alleging fraudulent procurement using fabricated documents.

A fine of 2 lakh was also imposed on Ms Rana, based on records showing she belonged to the 'Sikh-Chamar' caste.

As the faces on the rally stage transformed from apprehension to jubilation, the courtroom drama unfolded over 1,100 km away with the intensity of a thriller. He wasted no time in declaring that the Supreme Court decision was a great victory for Ms Rana as soon as it reached Amravati five minutes later.

Ms Rana's caste certificate was cancelled by the Bombay High Court after a petition was filed. Ms Rana's 'mochi' caste certificate had been revoked by the High Court on June 8, 2021 due to fraudulent procurement using fabricated documents. Also, the court imposed a fine of 2 lakh on Ms Rana, asserting that her records indicated that she belonged to a 'Sikh-Call' caste.

As the clock read 11:58 pm, a bench composed of Justices JK Maheshwari and Sanjay Karol began the eagerly anticipated decision. Ms Rana's electoral ambitions were revived by the court's ruling, which concluded that the High Court had erred by interfering with the report of the scrutiny committee on her caste certificate.

In 2019, when I contested the elections as an independent, the people of Amaravati supported me despite the huge political wave and at a time when I did not do any work in my constituency, I think they believed that their voice would be heard at Parliament," she said.

Following her disqualification, Ms Rana, flanked by her supporters and BJP leaders, filed her nomination papers at the returning officer's office at 1:42 pm.

After marrying BJP leader Ravi Rana in 2012, Ms Rana won the reserved Amravati parliamentary seat as an independent candidate in 2019. She was initially aligned with the NCP when she contested her inaugural election in 2014 but lost.
