Sushmita Sen Recalls Meeting Donald Trump, Says He Left No Lasting Impression

Miss Universe 1994 and Bollywood actor Sushmita Sen, recently spoke about her experience as president of the Miss India Universe franchise during 20102012, when Donald Trump, now the US president, owned the Miss Universe Organisation. Talking about the unexpected opportunity in a media interview at promotional events of her web series Aarya, she revealed some details as to how complex it was to work on that opportunity and how difficult it was to keep one foot behind and the other one forward.

“The Miss Universe Organisation contacted me and asked, ‘Would you like to take on the franchise?’ I was taken aback, ‘Really? That felt like a dream!’” Sen recalled. “I signed a rather intense contract to take on the franchise, which was then owned by Donald Trump, making things far from easy or enjoyable.”

As Sen pointed out, she does not work directly with Trump. “Fortunately, the only people I reported to at the time were Paramount Communications and Madison Square Garden. They owned Miss Universe during the year I was employed there. In Trump’s case, I was a franchise holder rather than a direct employee.”

Though she later met Trump with regard to the franchise, Sen did not go into details about the encounter. “The point is, it doesn’t matter,” she remarked. When asked about any lasting impression Trump may have left, she stated, “Some people make an impression, not necessarily due to their power or accomplishments, but simply because of who they are. He is not one of those people.”

Donald Trump, the US president, is the owner of the Miss Universe Organisation between the years 1996-2015. He was very popular as a businessman and television celebrity before venturing into the political scene. He is later elected as the 45th President of the United States in 2017, loses the 2020 presidential election and comes back to office as the 47th President in January 2025.

In 1994, after becoming the first Indian woman to win the Miss Universe title, Sen gained recognition in the country and even led her to a modelling and acting career.

Her comeback to acting after a hiatus was massive with well established roles in the web show Aarya and the biographical drama Taali, in which she played the role of transgender activist Shreegauri Sawant, and received critical acclaim.
