Shooting at Kaps Café: A shooting at comedian-actor Kapil Sharma’s newly opened Kap’s Cafe in British Columbia (BC), Canada, late last night has left the residents, including those of Indian-origin, shaken and worried. The incident has sparked demands for immediate government action to prevent such attacks. Reports of extortion attempts on the South Asian community in Canada have been rising and members of the Indian diaspora say the shooting has increased fear and unease within the community.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), at least eight shots were fired at the café located in the 8400 block of 120 Street, on the border of Surrey and North Delta. Police received the call of shots fired at around 1:50 a.m. and responded quickly.
“We opened Kap’s Cafe with hopes of bringing warmth, community, and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversation. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking,” the statement read.

The cafe added that they were “processing the shock” but vowed to “stand firm against violence.” The message also thanked patrons for their support and emphasised the importance of community.
“Your kind words, prayers, and memories shared via DM mean more than you know. Let’s ensure Kap’s Cafe remains a place of warmth and community,” the statement concluded.
Meanwhile, Harjit Singh Laddi, an operative of the banned terror group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and one of India’s most wanted men listed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), has taken responsibility for the attack on social media. He along with one Toofan Singh cited anger over certain remarks allegedly made by Kapil Sharma on Nihangs as the reason behind the shooting.
Back home in India, the fallout of the shooting has put Kapil Sharma’s professional commitments in a limbo. Sources close to the comedian say he is yet to confirm if he will attend the next shoot of his Netflix show The Great Indian Kapil Show which is usually shot in Filmcity.
The shooting at Kap’s Café is the latest in a series of targeted attacks on Indian-origin celebrities in Canada. In September 2023, a similar shooting occurred at the Vancouver residence of Punjabi music artist A.P. Dhillon. Later in November, jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi claimed responsibility for a shooting at singer Gippy Grewal’s home.
These attacks are coinciding with the increasing tensions related to Khalistani separatist activities in Canada which have been causing frequent clashes within the Indian diaspora.
