SC Questions West Bengal Role as Petitioner in Sandeshkhali Matter: On Monday, the Supreme Court wondered why the West Bengal government was petitioning for "protecting the interests" of some private individuals.
During hearing of the state government's appeal against the Calcutta High Court's April 10 order directing a CBI investigation into allegations of crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali, the Supreme Court made the observation.
"Why should the state come in as a petitioner for protecting the interest of some private individuals?" a bench of Justices B R Gavai and Sandeep Mehta asked.
According to the state's counsel, some comments made in the high court order aggrieved it.

According to the counsel, comments about the state government are unfair, since the government has taken full action.

In July, the bench scheduled a hearing for the matter.
According to the state government, the high court's order demoralized the entire state machinery, including the police.

According to the plea, the high court ordered the State to provide the necessary support to the CBI without any guidelines, thereby usurping the authority of the state police to investigate cognisable crimes in the Sandeshkhali area, regardless of whether or not they relate to the allegations leveled by the PIL petitioners.
As of January 5, the CBI has already registered three FIRs related to the attacks on Enforcement Directorate officials in Sandeshkhali.
After conducting a thorough inspection of revenue records and physical inspection of alleged converted agricultural land into water bodies for pisciculture, the high court ordered the CBI to file a comprehensive report on the alleged illegal conversion of agricultural land into water bodies for pisciculture.
A comprehensive report on allegations of crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali was also ordered by the high court on the next date of hearing by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
