Russia Slams Donald Trump’s Threat to India: “Nations Can’t Be Forced to Choose Trade Partners”

Russia Slams Donald Trump’s Threat to India: One day after US President Donald Trump threatened India with new tariffs because it buys Russian oil, Russia on Tuesday expressed that such threats against Moscow are illegal.

Talking of the recent threat to the US, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov explained to the reporters that it is against the law to attempt to make countries cease trading with Russia.

Peskov also informed the reporters that countries reserve the right to select the traders they want and such threats are impossible.

The Kremlin spokesman went further to insist that any attempts to put pressure on the trading partners to Russia will be categorised as threats.

What has the Kremlin said?

"We hear many statements that are in fact threats, attempts to force countries to cut trade relations with Russia. We do not consider such statements to be legal," Peskov told reporters.

“We believe that sovereign countries should have and do have the right to choose their own trading partners, partners for trade and economic cooperation, and to choose for themselves the forms of trade and economic cooperation that are in the interests of a particular country,” he added further.

The statement by Kremlin follows the latest move by Trump who sent a stern warning to India on Monday night telling India that he would impose revised tariffs against them unless it ceased buying Russian oil and other military supplies.

It is not surprising that Trump issued this warning on Monday since the president of the US had been trying to broker a ceasefire in the war-torn country of Ukraine.

"India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA," wrote Trump.

To this caution, Indian government came up with a strongly-worded statement in which it blamed the US and European Union of targeting New Delhi.

"The targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," read the official statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs.

On August 1, 25 per cent US tariffs struck India. According to the official statement of Trump, the step is taken because India imposes tariffs on US goods, which according to the president of the USA “are the highest in the world.”
