Ranbir Kapoor Apologises After Viral Kolkata Dussehra Speech, Calls It a ‘Slip of the Tongue’

Actor Ranbir Kapoor, who is aggressively pushing his upcoming film Ramayana, apologised at an event in Chennai after a slip of the tongue at a Dussehra event in Kolkata brought a lot of bad comments on social media. The actor, who has lent his voice to Lord Ram in the film, was rebuked for making an incorrect statement that evil would eventually triumph over truth and goodness. He spoke about the controversy and apologised for his mistake at the event in Chennai on 21st October. As he spoke to the audience he also remembered a line from his movie Rockstar, ‘Jo bhi main kehna chahu, barbaad kare alfaz mere’.

The World will end if I don't get married. The actor explained to the audience about an incident that occurred during a Dussehra event yesterday wherein he had a slip of the tongue, “Burai chahe kitni bhi taqatwar kyun na ho, aakhir mein jeet sachchai aur achchai ki hogi (No matter how strong evil may be, ultimately, there will be victory of the true and the good).”

Ranbir then came up with an instance where he used to work with music composer AR Rahman on Rockstar and quoted a line from the film's song which said that he sometimes finds it difficult to say things right.

This is like a Rockstar collaboration with AR Rahman sir; I want to say it again and again and when I am gone, he will break down the words.” he added sincerely.

When asked about this incident, Sai Pallavi, who was sitting next to Ranbir, smiled.

The apology video went on to being a social media hit, and it received a range of responses from viewers. Some of those showed empathy for the actor, while others noted his lack of composure while apologizing.

“Tbh, we should be ashamed of this, let the man rest for a bit he's exhausted,” another commented. A third person commented: “He sounds very nervous……. don't worry #RK…You are doing great.”

There were also some viewers who pointed out that Ranbir's voice seemed shaky while he spoke about the controversy. Another user commented: “He's nervous, don't abuse. It's normal, it's human.”

Others found the actor commendable for admitting and apologising publicly to his error.

What went wrong at the Kolkata event?

On Dussehra, Ranbir Kapoor graced the occasion at the event organised by Salt Lake Sanskritik Sansad at Central Park, Salt Lake, Kolkata. Speaking about the victory of good over evil, the actor misquoted, “Burai kitni bhi taqatvar kyun na ho, aakhir mein ant sachchai aur achchai ki hi hogi (No matter how strong evil is, in the end, there will be truth and goodness).

The video soon captured the internet with online trolling and memes taking to social media, especially since Ranbir is set to portray Lord Ram in the upcoming Ramayana.

All about Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana

Ramayana is being directed by Nitesh Tiwari and will be produced in a two-part series of films as a remake of Hindu epic Ramayana. The first will be released in theaters Nov. 5, with previews beginning Nov. 4. Ranbir Kapoor is the next big thing to play Lord Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita, while Yash and Arun Govil, along with Lara Dutta, Ravi Dubey, Rakul Preet Singh and Vivek Oberoi are among the other big names in the cast.

The plans for the ambitious project are said to be being executed at a total cost of approximately Rs 4,000 crore in the two phases, the second of which is expected to be rolled out around Diwali this year.

The movie started its advance bookings the same day as the Kolkata event. The figures quoted say it has netted Rs 7.05 crore including blocked seats.

The release of Ramayana will be a comeback for Ranbir Kapoor, who had not performed in theatres in three years. His previous film was Animal (2023) which grossed more than Rs 900 crore at the global box office.
