Punjab’s Sangrur Road Accident: Speeding Car Kills 8 MGNREGA Workers, Injures 12 Others

Eight MGNREGA workers were killed Sunday after a quick car hit them as they were working along the Jakhal-Lehra road in Sangrur district in Punjab.

All the deceased were residents of Alisher village. Eight people died in the accident and another 12 were injured, authorities said. Of the injured, three to four people who were seriously hurt were referred to Sangrur Civil Hospital.

The district administration was working on all these aspects, said Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Poonamdeep Kaur. The administration will provide medical aid and all possible assistance to the victims and the families, she said.

The investigation into the incident is underway, said Sangrur Superintendent of Police Palwinder Cheema. He assured them strict action against the accused, adding that a first information report (FIR) would be filed.

The MGNREGA labourers are those who work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which is a scheme implemented by the government of India to ensure rural households some wage employment opportunities.

Congress leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said in a tweet on X that he was “deeply saddened” by the incident in Lehra where 8 MGNREGA workers were killed by a speeding car and many others injured.

“This is heartbreaking. These are the lowest paid workers who work hard for their livelihood. I plead with the administration to provide medical assistance for the injured, strict punishment for those responsible and proper compensation for the families of the slain.
