British Jets Intercept Number of Iranian Attack Drones: According to Rishi Sunak, British military jets shot down drones launched by Iran in its attack on Israel on Sunday, and he called for "calm heads to prevail" to avoid further escalation.
During an attack that triggered air raid sirens across Israel early on Sunday, Iran launched 170 drones, more than 30 cruise missiles, and at least 120 ballistic missiles.
"I can confirm that our planes did shoot down several Iranian attack drones," Sunak told broadcasters.
The UK participated in an internationally coordinated effort that enabled almost all of these missiles to be intercepted, saving lives not just in Israel but also in neighboring Jordan.
The UK sent "additional planes" to Iraq and Syria in addition to existing operations.
Tehran's attack was described by the prime minister as a "dangerous and unnecessary escalation," warning of its "fallout" on regional stability.
On Sunday, Sunak was scheduled to participate in discussions among the Group of Seven leaders.
"It's important that we coordinate with allies and we'll be discussing next steps at that moment," he said.
To support Operation Shader, the UK's counter-Islamic State operation, RAF jets and air refueling tanks were sent to the region.
Atkins couldn't confirm or deny whether drones were shot down today.
If Israel counterattacks, Sunak's going to talk to Joe Biden.
The Iranians say they'll respond "heavily" if Britain and the US back Israel.
