Opposition Slams VP Dhankhar’s Remarks on Judiciary; BJP Defends Vice President
TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee accused Dhankhar of repeatedly disrespecting the judiciary.

Opposition Slams VP Dhankhar’s Remarks on Judiciary: Mr. Jagdeep Dhankhar Vice President is condemned for his statements regarding the judiciary. This is said to undermine the institution and is close to contempt.
The Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, as well as eminent jurists, have condemned Dhankhar's statements for being insulting to constitutional tenets.
Surjewala stated that the Constitution is supreme, stating, “In our democracy, no office—whether President, Prime Minister, or Governor—stands above constitutional accountability.”
He then supported the Supreme Court's April 8 ruling, whereby bills reserved by the governors for the President would have to be acted on within 3 months; this was a bold and necessary check on those holding high offices.
Kalyan Banerjee, TMC, accused Dhankhar of disregarding the judiciary several times. “His comments on Supreme Court judges are unacceptable and nearly contemptuous. As a constitutional figure, he must respect other institutions,” Banerjee asserted.
Dare I say, it’s unacceptable; no one can delay legislative bills being passed, said Tiruchi Siva, DMK. “The rule of law must prevail over institutional overreach,” Siva said.
Kapil Sibal, senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP, defended Article 142, which gives power to the Supreme Court to order “complete justice”. He questioned, “This power is enshrined in the Constitution to ensure justice. Who is obstructing the President’s authority?”
On April 17, Dhankhar made highly controversial remarks before the interns of Rajya Sabha, where he called Article 142 a “constant threat to democratic forces” and questioned the judiciary’s right to set a deadline for the President. He also raised the question of why judges need judicial approval for FIRs because only the President and Governors enjoy constitutional immunity against prosecution.
The BJP gave Dhankhar a clean chit, alleging hypocrisy on the part of the opposition. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla retorted, “The opposition, which ignores parliamentary laws, mocks the Vice President, and shields rioters for votes, has no moral ground to lecture on constitutional propriety.”
