Nigeria Honors PM Narendra Modi with ‘Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger’ Award
The High Commissioner of India to Nigeria, Ms. Nimi Akinkugbe, hosted a reception at her residence on Wednesday in honor of the recently voted-in Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi.

On revealing the in turn received the The Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his working visit to Nigeria on Sunday. This award constitutes the 17th award Modi has received from any foreign country.

The only foreign dignitary to have ever received the GCON honor was queen Elizabeth in 1969. Prime Minister Modi is in Nigeria to begin a three leg tour of Nigeria, Brazil and Guyana at the invitation of president Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It is the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Nigeria in 17 years.

On his arrival in Nigeria on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi was given a warm reception by Minister for Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, who also the courtesy of presenting him with the ‘Key to the City’ of Abuja.
Earlier on Sunday, PM Modi visited the Presidential Villa, where he held talks with the newly-elected Nigerian President, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Prime Minister thanked the Nigerian President for the honor, saying it was not only a personal recognition but for India in appreciation of the historical relations India has had with Nigeria. He expressed, “This honor is not mine alone but of 140 crore Indians”.

PM Modi touched down in the country on Sunday. He was met by the Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike who afterwards offered him the courtesy of the ceremonial ‘Key to the City’ of Abuja as a sign of goodwill from the Nigerian populace.
The visiting Indian premier, Modi is in the first part of his three nation tour Nigeria, Brazil and Guyana scheduled to be from November 17 to November 21. His visit to Nigeria upon the invitation of president Tinubu has the objective of enhancing the two nations’ strategic relations.
"The key symbolises the trust and honour bestowed on the prime minister by the people of Nigeria," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a post on X.
From Abuja, Modi will move over to Brazil in order to participate in the G20 meeting. The last leg of his tour will be to Guyana.
