Nepal Girl’s Death in Odisha’s KIIT College Sparks Controversy, PM Oli Responds

Odisha’s KIIT College: A B.Tech third-year student from Nepal at KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, died by suicide in her hostel after enduring multiple instances of harassment and molestation from her ex-boyfriend, Advik Srivastava.
Dozens of Nepali students assembled last night and staged a protest, after which they claimed they were evicted from the campus.
Several posts have surfaced on social media claiming that Lamsal was being harassed by her ex-boyfriend. Her cousin too filed a complaint saying she was being blackmailed by a male student at the university, which led her to hang herself.

She earlier lodged an official complaint before the International Relations Office at the University against the male friend Advik Srivastava for abusing her on different occasions.
The students’ union of Nepal stated in a statement that KIIT University did not take action against the perpetrator, who is stated to be Praktriti’s male friend from the same batch.
Since there was mild tension among the Nepali students studying at KIIT over the girl's death, the university authorities had a discussion with the agitating foreign students.
"Keeping in view the situation, the Nepal students have been sent to their respective homes. The situation presently remained calm," the KIIT said.
Two platoons (1 platoon comprise 30 personnel) of police force police force were deployed to maintain law and order situation in the campus.
"The police have sealed the deceased girl's room and kept the body at the mortuary till the arrival of her parents," a varsity official said.

Nepal Prime Minister KP Oli Reacts
Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli has also reacted to the incident by stating the Nepal government is in touch with the relevant authorities. "It has come to our attention through media and social media that a Nepali student has died in the hostel of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Odisha and that Nepali students have been forcibly evicted from the hostel. The government is working on this matter through diplomatic channels and is in contact with the relevant authorities," Oli stated in a post on X.
"The University is closed Sine Die for all the International students from Nepal. They are hereby directed to vacate the university campus immediately today on 17th February, 2025," read a notice shared on social media.
However, a university release, soon after, appealed to all students from Nepal to "return to the campus and resume the classes".
Anil Prasad Yadav, a student from Nepal, told reporters at the railway station they were pushed out of the hostel.
Rajan Gupta, said they were protesting for the student who had died, but they were forcibly made to vacate the hostel. "The staff members came and asked us to vacate. They even hit those who were not packing quickly," he said.
