Mumbai Rains: Mumbai woke up to a wet and grey Saturday as heavy to very heavy showers pounded several parts of the city since morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the city today.
In Raigad, a red alert has been issued for August 16 with extremely heavy showers expected, while Palghar will see a fresh spell of heavy rain from Sunday to August 19.
The overnight rain led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas, especially in suburbs prone to flooding. Waterlogging was reported in Sion-King Circle, Bandra, Vile Parle, Andheri, Vashi and Vasai-Virar. Local train tracks are submerged at Sion station. Vehicles are wading through waterlogged roads in Bandra and Andheri. Pedestrians are walking on waterlogged streets in Vashi.

Also, the tunnel from Mankhurd T Junction to Maharashtra Nagar has been closed for traffic due to waterlogging. Railway tracks at Sion and Bandra stations are also submerged.

In view of the heavy rain, the Mumbai Police has advised people to avoid non-essential travel.
In a post on X, Mumbai Police wrote, “Mumbai is experiencing heavy rainfall with an Orange Alert in effect. Waterlogging and reduced visibility have been reported in several areas. Mumbaikars are advised to avoid non-essential travel and to exercise caution while venturing out. Police have been instructed to be on high alert, and the Mumbai Police is alert and ready to help Mumbaikars. In case of any emergency, dial 100 / 112 / 103.”
For Mumbai and Thane and Palghar, IMD issued a nowcast warning at 7am saying moderate to intense rain is expected in the next 3-4 hours. “Moderate to intense spells of rain very likely to occur at isolated places in the district of Ratnagiri, Raigad, Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Thane, Palghar during next 3-4 hours,” it tweeted.
But unlike previous years when such showers would bring the city to a grinding halt, Saturday’s rain caused minimal disruption so far. Suburban trains, the city’s lifeline, are running with only minor delays and major roads are not congested at the time of reporting. Civic officials said it’s because of better drainage management and pre-monsoon preparedness.
