Trump After Alaska Summit: President Trump and Russian President Putin had a “very productive” and “mutually respectful” summit in Alaska today as they looked for a way to end the Ukraine conflict – one of the deadliest in Europe in 80 years.
Putin said Russia is “seriously interested in putting an end” the conflict in Ukraine but had “legitimate concerns” to be considered.
The two leaders made the comments during a joint press conference after three hours of talks on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a war that has killed thousands so far and which Moscow has not yet ended, and made rapid gains just before the summit. Neither of them took questions from the press.

“We had a very productive meeting, and there were many points that we agreed on. A couple of big ones that we haven’t quite gotten there, but we made some headway. There’s no deal until there’s a deal, so I will call up NATO in a little while, and I will call up the various people that are appropriate. I’ll, of course, call President Zelenskyy and tell him about today’s meeting… We made some great progress today… We’ll probably speak to you soon and hopefully see you again very soon,” Trump said while speaking at a press conference alongside Putin.
The two leaders did not take questions from reporters after their joint briefing.
Russia’s top economic envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, said the US “got it very well” in Alaska and that the two countries would continue to build relations despite “resistance”. “The US-Russia summit in Alaska was very productive,” Dmitriev said, “we discussed a lot and agreed on many things,” as he put it.

As Trump finished speaking, he mentioned a second meeting, to which Putin smiled and said in English, “Next time in Moscow”.
Earlier Putin said he wants to end the war in Ukraine but also said you have to “eliminate all the roots of the conflict”.
He also hopes the agreement reached with Trump will bring peace to Ukraine.
“The situation in Ukraine has to do with fundamental threats to our security. We have always considered the Ukrainian nation a brotherly nation. Everything that’s happening is a tragedy for us. Therefore, the country is sincerely interested in putting an end to it. At the same time, we are convinced that in order to make the settlement lasting and long-term, we need to eliminate all the primary roots and causes of that conflict," he said.
