Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Tuesday that democracy in India was murdered only once in 1975. What happened in 1975 has never happened again and will never happen again. We believe in law. The spirit of democracy is alive in the country.
Actually, Rijiju has said this after Sonia Gandhi's article published in The Hindu. In a tweet, he posted videos of some of her speeches and captioned, 'Sonia Gandhi lecturing about democracy? Nothing can be more dishonest than talking about the independence of the judiciary from the Congress side.
Sonia had said in her article that the central government is destroying all the three pillars of democracy. Along with this, he accused the government of suppressing the voice of opposition in Parliament, misuse of agencies, ending media freedom, creating an atmosphere of hatred and violence in the country.
Read here what Rijiju said...
Without naming the Emergency imposed in 1975 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Rijiju said that democracy was murdered only once in 1975. It has never happened again, and it will never happen. He told the opposition that you should ask all the questions to the elected government, but do not question the country.
He further said that the difficulty comes when some people think that God has given them the right to rule the country. Some people or families feel that they are above common citizens, they come from certain background. Then his thinking goes to a different level. We must follow the court order, but when someone thinks that he is above the court, he starts criticizing the court's decision.
I see that in Parliament and outside Parliament also, the person who speaks the most is saying that he is not being allowed to speak. Why was India ruled by foreigners for 1200 years? This happened not because India was weak, but because there were elements within the Indian society that helped those foreign powers to continue to rule.A few days ago, the Chief Justice had said that no pressure was being put on him to fulfill his duties. The government is not putting any kind of pressure on them. Despite this, some people continue to say that Indian democracy is in serious trouble and the Indian judiciary is over.
