Jadeja Rested, Not Dropped and Chahal on Hold: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement, just less than 24 hours after India lifted the T20 World Cup in June. As Kohli and Rohit were named for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, they were requested to cut short their vacation, which will be played between August 3 and 7 in Colombo. Jadeja was not picked up.

Only six OID matches will be played by India ahead of the Champions Trophy next year in February. The three matches are against Sri Lanka, and the other three remaining matches are against England at home next year, just a week before they leave for the tournament. The assumption is that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is in discussion with new head coach Gautam Gambhir.

As Ravindra Jadeja was missing, later on, it’s assumed that he was not in the scheme for the Champions Trophy, as he was also the one who dropped from the World Cup 2023 team. However, as per the report of ESPNCricinfo, selectors rested Ravindra Jadeja and did not drop him but he would remain India's primary spin-bowling all-rounder.

According to the report, there were two reasons listed why Agarkar and Gambhir did not pick Jadeja for the Sri Lanka tour. Firstly, Agarkar and Gambhir want Axar Patel to test whether he can imitate his T20I performance in ODIs, and secondly, that will be accepted by the board as fresh as possible for the 10 Test matches which India are criticised harshly to play between September 2023 to January 2024.

In August 2023 he last played in the format, Chahal did not get the chance to get selected in any of the single matches for India in the T20 World Cup, and his last appearance for OIDs is now over 19 months ago.

The report of ESPNCricinfo added that the selector's legspinner has been kept on hold as of now.

Yuzvendra Chahal has worked against his favour with the changing dynamics of the sport, as he is a genuine No.11 in a line-up in the two white-ball formats. According to the selectors, they feel that he is a world-class bowler, he needs to wait for his opportunities and when presented he will make the most of it.

The Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament is the best hope for Chahal which he could rely on as the Sri Lanka opportunity is gone which will be held between December 20, 2024 and January 18, 2025. BCCI are following the list of a domestic tournament to make their selections for the England home series and the Champions Trophy.
