Iran Confronts Us Destroyer in Gulf of Oman, Claims American Warship Driven Off

Iranian forces chased off a US destroyer in the Gulf of Oman on Wednesday in a clash that Tehran says made the American vessel flee, said Iranian state television, as carried by AFP. The incident occurred nearly a month after US strikes hit Iran amid a conflict with Israel.

State TV said that an Iranian army helicopter flew over the USS Fitzgerald at 10.00 am local time (0630 GMT) after the vessel “tried to enter the waters under the supervision of the Iranian navy.
The television network, according to AFP, said the US destroyer made threats of its own but "the Iranian pilot firmly continued the mission and clearly repeated to stay away from Iranian waters". Iranian forces then told the US ship to “change its course southward,” and ultimately make the US ship “succumb” and turn around.
No comments were immediately available from the US Navy.
Iranian troops have a record of confronting US naval ships off its southern coast, including the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. In 2023, Tehran said it had made a US submarine surface while crossing the Strait of Hormuz, a claim discounted by Washington.
The new incident comes after US airstrikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities on June 22 in a 12-day war between Tehran and Israel. Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said that the damage from those strikes was quite significant and substantial but uranium enrichment will go on, he mentioned to the newspaper.
