11 suspected Kuki militants were killed: At least 11 suspected Kuki insurgents were killed in an encounter with security forces in Jiribam district of Manipur today, sources said. The situation is dynamic and more information is awaited.

There were also some injuries reported among Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in the incident involving suspected Kuki militants in the border district with Assam, sources added.

The encounter started after the suspected kuki insurgents made a large-scale assault on a police station in Jiribam which sources say was under attack from two sides. The police station is adjacent to a relief camp for internally displaced persons. Sources said that the attackers may have also intended to hit the camp.

Various attacks have been made at this police station located in Borobekra of Jiribam for the past couple of months.

Thereafter the Kuki insurgents rotated towards the Jakurador Karong settlement which is around 1 km from the police station and even began tormenting the local residents and torching their homes as per sources even while engaging the security forces in crossfire.

Jiribam has been tense over the past week since there has been an onset of yet another round of violence.

A week ago, last Thursday, in Jiribam, an Hmar woman was shot dead by suspected Meitei militants who also yment of houses. Her husband is very angry police said that when she was shot she was raped.

The earlier incident happened when a Kuki insurgent shot a woman from the Meitei ethnic group in the valley while she was bent down working in the rice field.

In Imphal East District, more suspected Kuki insurgents fired from the hills this morning injuring a farmer. With the paddy harvest period, such attacks are worrying as some farmers are becoming afraid to work on their farms, officials stated.

The CRPF is the largest Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) in the country. Over time, it has developed into a competent military establishment achieving notable victories in anti Mao insurgency campaigns in Jharkhand and other regions. It played a key role in combating lethargy, especially in West Bengal and Kaimur and Rohtas areas of Bihar India.
