Justice Sanjiv Khanna was assuming charge from Justice DY Chandrachud, who retired on November 10, after serving two glorious years.
The Centre had made the announcement on October 24, a week after Justice Chandrachud had officially proposed him as his successor, according to constitutional norms.

Justice Chandrachud was given a rousing farewell by judges, lawyers, and staff of the apex court and high courts on his last working day as CJI on Friday (November 8).
Justice Khanna is the son of former Delhi High Court judge Justice Dev Raj Khanna and the nephew of prominent former Supreme Court judge H R Khanna. He is 64 years old.
Justice Khanna has more than four decades of judicial experience. He had joined the Bar Council of Delhi as an advocate in 1983 and practiced at the district courts located at the Tis Hazari complex.
Thereafter, he practiced in the High Court of Delhi and tribunals.
Besides, he was made the Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department and in 2004, became the Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
Who is Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the new CJI of India?
Justice Khanna was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court on 18 January 2019, even before he was made the Chief Justice of any High Court.

His latest decision upon the constitutionality of the electoral bond scheme recently focused upon transparency in funding elections, underlining voters' rights to know the source of funding in those elections.
He was also one of the bench members who upheld the 2019 abrogation of Article 370, which finally cemented the integration of Jammu and Kashmir into India.
